Sweet Southern Comfort

After several weekends away in corners across the country (Miami to Santa Barbara to North Sutton, New Hampshire), Buddy Jewell's "Sweet Southern Comfort" crossed my mind as our plane landed into BWI on Sunday.

While we certainly didn't land in the Deep South, we did land pretty close to home and that's what Jewell's song so wonderfully captures...

I love Buddy's tradtional southern values - my favorite song is "This Ain't Mexico"...gotta love these lyrics!

SOME CALL ITIMMIGRATION; I SAY IT'S AN INVASION
AND IT'S TIME TO FINISH THAT WALL

ACAUSE THIS AINT MEXICO.SORRY PARTNER, BUT, WE DON'T HABLO
WE LOVE MARGARITAS, AND THEM SIZZLIN' FAJITAS
BUT WE STILL REMEMBER THE ALAMO
DON'T MAKE NO DIFFERENCE HOW YOU SPIN IT
YOU WANNA LIVE HERE, THERE'S A LINE, GET IN IT
YOU CAN CALL ME A CLOSED-MINDED, OLD-FASHIONED, FLAG-WAVIN' REDNECK, GRINGO
    BUT THIS AINT MEXICO

    Alright Buddy!

Oh Dickie......I was joking. I, and many others I hope, found these lyrics ignorant and prejudice.....not hysterical. But...perhaps that's the South.

  6. A few thoughts: 1. I LOVE this song! Always makes me miss home and want to move back to the solid South (currently reside in Miami).

    2. "This Ain't Mexico" is hilarious! Is it prejudice? Sure, but that doesn't mean it can't be funny. All races, nationalities, and groups have their prejudice jokes, songs, and whatnot..as long as these don't turn to violence, what's a joke between neighbors? ha!

    3. Is it just me, or does anyone else want fried chicken, red beans and rice, biscuits, and sweet tea? YUM!

  7. ....sorry gang, I wasn't in on this one. Though I don't disagree that those lyrics are pretty ignorant. Needless to say, I've never listened to Mr. Jewell's music.

  8. Oh, I get it - Buddy Jewell was joking about his disdain for Mexicans! Ha ha ha....what a kidder! I guess I - and Anon. - "No Hablo" Buddy's witty brand of southern humor!

Funny that KINHA commented on this. I don't think Buddy would like some foreigner commenting on a post about his songs. Those lyrics are an embarrassment to the South and to the US in general.

  11. Alright Y'all,

Let's get a few things out there:

    1. I do stand by my feelings for the lyrics in Sweet Southern Comfort, albeit I will admit to being unfamiliar with the other song's in Jewell's catalog.

    2. While I did have a chuckle at Anon's first comment this morning, I don't endorse racism or prejudices.

    3. I'll continue to leave comments up (controversial or otherwise) as I believe they spark interesting discussion on southern culture in the 21st century.

    4. That being said, comments will be removed if the author asks them to be (as was the case this morning) or they are grossly offensive.

    I'm gonna weigh in too.

While Buddy's lyrics about immigration could be taken as slightly off-color, as a proud member of the GOP I do believe we should build a wall to protect our country and if you want to come into it you should do so like our forefathers, some of which only three generations ago, did legally - apply for your papers, learn US history and take the test, pay taxes, and contribute to Social Security.
