Higher Education in Tailgating

Commenter 'CIL' sent this to me and I thought it was worth sharing.

Tailgater Monthly's 2009 Tailgate Raking:

10. University of Colorado: "One of the most naturally beautiful settings in all of tailgating. No matter what the weather, there is a microbrew to fit your situation."

9. University of Georgia: "Tailgating in Athens is as serious as the game itself."

8. University of Washington: "It is an uncommonly cool event to tailgate on the water."

7. University of Alabama: "Bama's faithful arrive almost a week early to set up the perfect spot and to place orders for ribs or sauce from Dream Land or Archibalds."

6. University of Texas: "Not many people have pride in their grilling skills like the people who fill the lots surrounding the DKR-Texas Memorial Stadium."

5. University of Wisconsin: "The fans are loud, the tailgates are massive, and the beer, brats and cheese are in no small quantity."

4. University of Tennessee: "Combining a trip up the Tennessee River with SEC football is an experience that has become a tradition for many of the Volunteer faithful."

3. LSU: "The food here is unlike any other in the world. That, accompanied with the atmosphere of a night game in Death Valley, can give you tailgating memories that will last a lifetime."

2. Penn State: "Great tradition, a constant fan base and a party that sprawls all around the stadium."

1. University of Mississippi: "Simply put, an Ole Miss Saturday in the Grove is tailgating at its finest...the elegant tailgate setups with centerpieces, silverware and a feast as southern as Mississippi."

  1. I cannot believe that there is indeed a magazine titled Tailgater Monthly...what can they possibly have to talk about outside of one issue...hahaha, unbelievable...who subscribes to this thing?

  2. Over the past couple of seasons, I've been to tailgates at number(s) 9, 4, & 1 as well as Clemson. I'm seeing more and more often folks staying at their tailgates with generator powered big-screen tv electronics setups, complete with a Dish to watch their game, as well as every other game. Not bad (all things considered)...

  3. We were in Knoxville this weekend for the game. It was literally raining sideways and the fans were still out in FULL force. Such a blast!

  4. In other Top 10 lists, an attempt to rate the Top 10 Tailgating Vehicles:

  5. How on earth did the Dodge Caliber and Kia Sol make that list? Baffled.

  6. Wake Forest Tailgating tradition:

Girls break out their pearls and brightly colored sundresses while "Southern Gents" sport madras and bow ties. Some mornings, I'd prefer the football uniform of jeans and t-shirts, but overall, it's a tradition I wouldn't change.

  7. Not only did they include the Caliber, Sol, and Grand Carvan, but they omitted the 4Runner! And no Volvo wagon? C'mon.

  8. It doesn't stop with just a publication for the avid "Tailgater". I actually help plan an annual trade show that buys and sells tailgating accessories. Portable Tailgate Toilet anyone? Check it out at wwww.showproco.com

  11. I spent the past several years at Ole Miss and am now at Tennessee. After comparing the two I find it strange that Tenn is so high on the list. Just based on the tailgating culture, the difference between the Grove and whatever part of the hodgepodge you partake of in Knoxville, is like the difference between shooting a bullet and throwing it. There is no comparison.

One thing that I certainly agree with about what has been said above is the point about the fans. At Tenn being a fan is the focus and there are tons of them and they are true fans. At Ole Miss the party is the focus and they do it well, with style, and they are true to the party.
