SGStyle: Weekend Wardrobe

Alright, let's start this wardrobe rundown with the casual basics that have become something of a uniform:

  • Bass Pro Shop: Camo cap, custom embroidered logo, last name on the back - done during a business trip to Nashville;
  • Perlis: 1st one went missing in college, 2nd yellowed and frayed, 3rd is being broken in now;
  • Saints: Wool, raised embroidery, fitted.
  • Polo Oxford: Custom fit, all the colors, worn pressed and starched by night, patched and frayed by day;
  • Patagonia Araveto: Light weight, slim fit, looks just a sharp as a merino cardigan, but as comfortable as cashmere.
  • Levi's 514: Straight leg, low rise, perfect fit - stonewash by day, indigo by night;
  • J. Crew Khaki's: Regular-fit essential chino - classic american staple.
  • Clark Wallabees: They only get better with age;
  • Bean Mocs: Worn year round in rain, sleet, snow and sunshine;
  • New Balance 574: Inexpensive, long lasting, basic gray.
Add in either my quilted Eksdale or Beaufort Barbour and a tote or two and I'm in my element, comfortable and appropriate enough for just about any activity.

What defines y'alls weekend uniform? All sweats and fleece? Jeans and T's? Polos and chinos?

  1. Hey, its me every day in college!

  2. I'm sorry but Wallabees are the worst. My little sister wears them/

  3. Looking good my man.

    I don't wear caps, but everything else is pretty on point.

    I'd probably switch out the more technical fleece for something a little different. I have a variety of Woolrich Woolen Mills outerwear for just that.

    My chinos are of a slimmer cut, but besides denim and khaki what else could you possibly need? Have you ever thought of copping some selvedge? APC's are pretty easy to get your hands on.

    Kicks are on point, but you can catch me in Vans Authentics instead of the New Balances.

    I always knew you were a sharp dressed man.

  4. Oh yeah, can't forget Calvin Klein crew neck white tees.

  5. Good post. I need to get a Perlis hat, or really more stuff Perlis in general. I think that I used to have a Perlis hat way back in my days in Mandeville, when my tee-ball team was "sponsored" by Perlis. I probably don't wear caps enough to justify it, but it would nice to have, just in case.

  6. I'd like that Saints cap. Bet they'll be hard to find for a while. I think Perlis had something like that in mardi gras colors. Gold on black is more the thing, obviously.

  7. Manifold: You were/are a put together college kid - not much has changed for me from college either now that I think about but the fit and quality.

    May: Your little sister definitely gets why they are one of the most iconic and comfortable shoes ever designed.

    LAS: Thanks man - I prefer Hanes - crew neck and v-neck.

    Trip: Mandeville, eh? Didn't know we shared South LA roots. And a tee ball team sponsored by Perlis - probably the most natty 5 year olds around.

    longwing: I hear you on the availability and price hike of Saints gear these days. I'm holding out till the fall to purchase a restrained Super Bowl champs polo.

  8. Great post and the gear is pretty standard issue. The camo hat? Terrible. Just being honest. Though, I guess if you were wearing it in the forest, you'd blend in and I wouldn't see you....so it wouldn't be an issue.

  9. AEV: Is that a backhanded compliment regarding the gear? Regarding the camo hat, I stand behind it - both in on the streets and in the forest.

  10. Not backhanded at all - love the gear, don't love the hat. Too "dress up"....it's like wearing a firefighter's helmet or police hat around town....Bass Pro Shops is fishing gear, no? Forest fishing? The camo/fishing connection is lost on me.....

  11. Im a big fan of a cashmere t- shirt, scarf and a cute loafer/ flat. Works for every season and looks timeless and effortless. Wallabees were part of my pinnochio halloween costume when I was 6 or 7 so I do not have fond memories of them!

  12. Big fan, DAM. The good part about everything you posted is that it is 100% interchangeable. Not to mention it all looks sharp.

  13. Amazing. I can't imagine in what imaginary world that you live in which a "camo cap" is considered "Southern Gent" - it's pure redneck (though, I acknowledge residents or Louisiana are kinda pseudo-southern and certainly have no knowledge of what is gentlemanly by any convetional southern standards – mardis gras – come on). Adding the fact that the cap was personalized adds all the “high class” aura of a belt buckle with ones name on it. You just blew the shibboleth.

    NFL baseball caps and Wallabies are also clearly infra dig – your tastes have consistently indicated that you went to some southern state school diploma mill – in which case, one needn’t expect that you would know what a real southern gent would wear. Abandon this website or rename it for what it is, middle-class, striver with low SAT score seeking gentleman status……

  14. Good post. I have a couple of caps that are broken in nicely for which I usually reach. The oxford button down with jeans is a staple. I also tend to default with a technical fleece vest and a sweater if conditions demand it. Pair those off with my go to boots, Blundstone. CK crew necks for me too.

  15. BTG: Right there with you - I have a Retro X vest as well and with the staple crew neck sweater in either cable or Shetland give versatility to the whole kit.

    In general: The key point I guess I was too subtly trying to demonstrate here is the difference in fit - the jeans aren't baggy or boot cut, the shirt doesn't blouse and the fleece is fitted giving it a clean, tailored edge to otherwise completely casual and potentially sloppy ensemble.

  16. "your tastes have consistently indicated that you went to some southern state school diploma mill..."

    DAM...damn! Don't you just love the hubris of anonymous commenters? The cocksurety and certainty of their authority-the exactitude with which they take you to task. I commend you for posting the comment. And finally, I know where you went to college and I couldn't have gotten in.

  17. D -- To counter some of the other comments... I love that you put in pieces like the camo hat... and do some hunting posts, etc... it creates conversation, and offers a valuable alternative the the same everyday shit. I LOVE my barbours (quilted, bedale, beufort, and vest)... but ALSO LOVE my Carhartt work jacket, and my double knee Mountain Khakis/Carhartts, etc. I wear a suit and a bow tie to work every day, and am just as comforatble in my woodshop clothes.
    Lifestyle --at least a good one-- exceeds a narrow wardrobe. Period.

  18. I'm with ADG on the Anonymous post. I wonder where Anonymous went to school or what his/her SAT scores were (and whether they came after SAT-score-inflation). Meanwhile, add a Hard Rock hat, and I'll be happy!

  19. Anonymous seems like a tool, no? I hate when people talk smack and then make it anonymous... seriously? Chicken shit. (Am I allowed to say chicken shit here?)

    1 thought on your awesome wardrobe post(a man talking about fashion is always awesome in my eyes): Wallabees only get better with age... and stink up a room with age! Whew!

    I'm from New Orleans as well :) Loving your blog!

  20. Three thoughts:

    One: Anonymous, if you had any real class (which you're so sure DAM doesn't) then you'd have the guts to attach your name to your thoughts.

    Two: Check your Solid South Map...Louisiana is right there buddy and New Orleans is the thick of it!!

    Two: DAM is the epitome of a Southern Gent and last time I checked, private schools in our nation's capital aren't "southern state school diploma mill.."

  21. I think your selections are classy. the shirt and jean combo is a weekend classic for everyone.

  22. Gant: Thanks friend - while the shirt/pant combo is a classic for everyone it's about fit. Custom oxford and straight slim jean. It takes the traditional ensemble makes it modern and fresh.
