A Reader's Letter

I received the following letter from regular reader/commenter 'CIL' and with his permission am posting this for all of you to read. There have been no editorial changes. Pictures are from his letter. My response will come on Monday.

Dear SG-

As a reader of your blog, I take great interest in your posts about clothing, travels, sports, hunting and your take on and awareness of current events. I respect your distinguished opinions and perspectives and find them all quite entertaining and tasteful.

However, I must say that I am disappointed in the fact that you have not posted about the greatest environmental catastrophe in U.S. history.

In the past you have written about hurricanes, floods, and terrorist attacks so I see no reason for you not to bring awareness to the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.
In case your readers who live or are from ‘above the line’ haven’t heard…

There is an oil well down yonder that has been spewing thousands of barrels of oil into the Gulf of Mexico for over 45 days.

There is an oil slick above the water and oil plumes underwater that have the capability of covering every beach in the state of Florida and make landfall as far up as the Carolina’s.

As an outdoorsman it has to break your heart to see wildlife pictures of ducks, pelicans and sea turtles covered in oil.

I know you enjoy a good po-boy, some boiled crawfish, but imagine years without it.

It’s a possibility.

The oil spill could provide a crippling blow to the hometown that you are “proud to call home” and your home state that has always been a ‘Sportsman’s Paradise.’

So as you post on your blog between now and August (the earliest date the oil will stop leaking), think about the times you have spent on the Gulf Coast with family and friends.

Think about the next shrimp po-boy you hope to have…

Think about a cold Abita beer with hot broiled crawfish…
Think about all that you love down in Louisiana and everything that is at risk…

Bring awareness. Bring a SthrnGent voice.
-CIL

  1. So glad you decided to post this letter and CIL, I'm glad you wrote it. I was just in New Orleans for Memorial Day weekend and ate all the boiled crawfish and shrimp poboys I could, knowing the next time I had them could sadly not be on my subsequent trips to the Big Easy, but long in the future. As of today, the oil has spread further east and the first balls of toxins have washed up on Florida's shores. BP has got to get this under control and NOW! A previously loyal customer, I haven't so much as stepped foot inside or near a BP since the leak began and have no intention for that to change. --BunnyB

  2. I'm not exactly sure what one more blog post with oily animals is going to do to help this catastrophe. It surely isn't going to stop the oil from spilling, or help a secondary well to be drilled any faster. It's not going stop oil from getting into major currents or stop any animals from getting covered with oil. It's not like what's going on down there is breaking news, and that it hasn't been talked about on every news outlet every day for the past 46 days. What else really needs to be said about it?

  3. I agree with Trip. Even blind and deaf children in the African desert know about the oil spill...a blog post is not going to help raise awareness. If you don't know about it by now you must literally live under a rock.

  4. The letter to the Gent was not for him to reiterate the obvious but to provide his personal perspective on the situation. Being from New Orleans and now living in DC the Gent must have a unique view on the spill. It's a point of discussion, not a news broadcast. -CIL

  5. Does everything have to be about a cause? I believe the word "awareness" has become overused.

I also think that its DAM's blog and he can post whatever he would like. I enjoy all of the clothing and new Southern apparel stuff and I believe its a great blog.

I think some people just like to give their opinion to make themselves feel better.

  7. Let me reiterate that I didn't find CIL's letter offensive or negative. He was expressing his frustration to me about the situation, not at me, and hoping in a complimentary way that I would post about the gulf spill like I did on Katrina, Nashville, etc.

As a local New Orleanian, I thought and stand by, CIL's letter as an authentic example of his escalating frustration of the situation in the Gulf and wanted to share a first hand, real account.

Hell, I'm beyond flattered and honored he took the time to write the letter and happy to share it with you all.
