Marshmallow World

The Building on Saturday Morning

By now you've all seen a few images of the historic amount of snow that has pounded DC twice across the last week.

Left: Ontario Place, NW (for you JJM & SKM) Right: Rock Creek Parkway from Calvert Street Bridge

Waking up on Saturday morning the District looked pretty incredible with a blanket of 12"+, streets and avenues with carpets of white and trees glistening with ice and snow.

Left: Enroute to the sledding hills, in the street 'natch. Right: Weeeeeee!

Meeting up with friends, those rafts my father sent this fall in advance of beach time this summer, turned out to be the perfect last minute sleds over at the three hills created at Rock Creek Parkway and Calvert Street.

Left to Right: The Women of 1810 (Tara, Cait, & Pamela), DAM, and Bill

Now with 5+ days of snow behind us, we are driving down to New Orleans today. That's right, driving - flights canceled and rebooking nearly impossible, we are going to break the 17 hour trip down with a stop at my parents' house in Chattanooga before heading to this historical carnival season otherwise known as Lombardi Gras!

SG 2.0

Many of you have seen SOUTHERN GENT evolve over the last year and some even noticed the format changes that went live last week. But with the new logo complete, officially ready to debut SG 2.0.

For those of you reading SG through a RSS feed you may not have seen the new header that captures the essence of the blog and and the footer at the bottom of the webpage.

I've also added LinkWithin to each dispatch to share other posts with similar tags you might find of interest.

Much thanks to Jessica Nell Graves of Front Porch Studio and her blog, The Love List, for working with me across the last 5 months (we started in September) and making all my small edits, changes, and tweeks to get everything on point.

Beer & Bubbly

A little bit redneck...

...a little bit refined.

As part of my new year's resolution to organize closets and the computer, I found these pictures trying to make order out of the chaos that is iPhoto and the pictures folder. Cheers!

Week's Lagniappe

la-gnaippe [lan-yap, lan-yap] - noun: something given or obtained gratuitously or by way of good measure; bonus

SGSportsFan: This is a clip from Drew Bree's on The Jay Leno Show. While Jay traditionally does 10 at 10 he did 9 at 9 for December 9 and that Drew was on at 9:00 central time. I also believe it is because Drew's number is 9. Listen to the interview, Brees comes across just as awesome as you'd expect him to be.

SGCelebrates: And last but not least,

Happy Hanukkah Y'all!

Up for Auction...

Purchased in December 2007, my Barbour Classic Beaufort is, unfortunately, a size too small when wearing it with either the quilted or warm pile liner so I am putting it up for sale on eBay HERE and wanted to let y'all know.

Description from Orvis: "Medium Weight for All ‘Round Use. This all–purpose waxed–cotton jacket for all–season wear–has a broken–in, shine–free Sylkoil finish for the ultimate in classic weather resistance. It features two front bellows pockets with snap storm flaps and two moleskin–lined handwarmer pockets. There is also a concealed zip–up wallet pocket and a full–width rear game and cartridge pocket with side zips. It is lined full length with cotton tartan. The corduroy collar is studded for an optional hood. Snap–closed throat flap and storm–fly front provide additional protection. Raglan sleeves with underarm ventilation, adjustable storm cuffs, and brass–finish two–way metal zipper... Specially treated 100% cotton shell. Cold sponge, no soap. England."

Worn for only a few months a year here in DC, it is in excellent condition with little wear and I rewaxed it with Barbour Thornproof Dressing this past August.

Running true to your suit jacket size, if you are a 38 it can be comfortably worn with a Barbour zip-in warm pile liner or in a slimmer more modern way if you choose.

Fine Print & Details:
Olive C38 Barbour Beaufort including trademark "Barbour" Lapel Pin
Lining: Barbour Tartan Plaid
Chest (Armpit to Armpit): 22"
Sleeve (Shoulder to Cuff): 22"
Length (Under neck to hem): 31"

There are both "bid" and "buy now" options or I would be happy to sell it directly to a Southern Gent reader for a reasonable offer. Just contact me directly via the email in my profile.

AskSG: Palmetto & Cresent Shirts

Over the course of the blog, I've received a variety of questions from "Is that turducken really good?" to "What kind of boots should I get for all this snow in NY?" to "I'm coming to DC/going to New Orleans and would love some recommendations."

They are usually related to a post, so I'll respond directly if your address is in the comment field or answer back with another comment, but figured some would be worth sharing:

"So, there's a mens store or a shirt maker in Charleston that makes a button down oxford with the palmetto as its logo. Any ideas on where I can find these shirts? My friends from CoC [College of Charleston] and the Citadel rep them and I cannot find one anywhere!"

DAM said...

The shirts you are interested in come from M. Dumas & Sons at the corner of King & Society in Charleston. The venerable old men's store has a Palmetto Collection of kit from bow ties and polos to shorts and embroidered pants. You can find the entire collection HERE.

Alligators & Armadillos

I found these images some time ago and was waiting for the right post, when a colleague of mine was asked over lunch what it was like growing up in northwest Louisiana and she replied, "It was all alligators and armadillos."

This is the right post.

Week's Lagniappe

la-gnaippe [lan-yap, lan-yap] - noun: something given or obtained gratuitously or by way of good measure; bonus

SGNews Alert: As PCW put it, Glory! Glory! Garth Brooks has announced he is coming out of retirement for an extended concert run at The Wynn in Las Vegas. Beyond excited.

Misc: King Curtis of North Carolina is the precocious son on ABC's Wife Swap. His video on 'Bacon' is below, but click HERE for more including his love of 'Chicken Nuggets' and defense of food.

SGSports Fan: Most importantly, #4 Saints (Who Dat!) go against #2 Giants (and hometown native, Eli) on Sunday in a 4-0 vs. 5-0 showdown in the Dome.

Who Dat! Who dat say they gonna beat dem Saints!

Please Stand By

My apologies. On the heels of increased readership and traffic on SOUTHERN GENT, I have a string of lunch meetings and evening plans that has prohibited me from getting posts out on a regular M/W/F or T/T schedule.

I'll be back at it next week with:
  • SGStyle: A follow up to Maxminimus' post HERE
  • SGGear: The Jolly Trolley
  • Misc: Vintage 198o's
Stay Tuned.

Yankee Dandy

While he isn't from The South, this Senior at Drew University's incredible dorm room is certainly note-worthy here at SOUTHERN GENT. From his prep-roots at Choate Rosemary Hall and internships with Charlotte Moss, Maximilian Sinsteden has created an eclectically classic space that is perfect for 1 to live and 20 for drinks.

Born and raised in Hartford, CT, Sinsteden's space has been all over the blogs since first appearing in a New York Magazine story by Sarah Bernard last week. Here's a few of the images, but for more check out the slide show.
